Edibles 101 — Why They Hit Different and How to Dose Them Right

Edibles are the most commonly misused cannabis product — not because they're dangerous but because most people don't understand how they work. Here's everything you need to know before you try them.
Edibles are responsible for more uncomfortable first experiences than any other cannabis product — and it's almost never because something went wrong. It's because nobody explained how they actually work before the person ate one.
Let's fix that.
Why Edibles Are a Different Animal
When you smoke or vape, cannabinoids go directly into your bloodstream through your lungs. Effects come on in minutes. When you eat an edible, your body has to digest it first. It goes through your stomach, gets processed by your liver, and then enters your bloodstream as a different compound entirely — one that's actually more potent than what you get from smoking.
That process takes time. Anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on your metabolism, your body weight, and what you've eaten that day. The effects, when they arrive, tend to hit harder and last significantly longer — often 4 to 8 hours compared to 1 to 2 hours from flower or vape.
The Mistake Almost Everyone Makes
Someone eats a gummy. Waits 45 minutes. Feels nothing. Eats another one. An hour later both kick in at the same time and the experience is nothing like what they wanted.
This happens constantly. The fix is simple — start low, and wait a full two hours before deciding you need more.
How to Actually Dose
For a first-timer or someone with low tolerance, start with 2.5mg to 5mg of THC. That's a microdose — gentle, manageable, and a good way to understand how your body responds. Most products sold at Abra-K-Dabra are clearly labeled with THC content per serving so you'll always know what you're working with.
5mg to 10mg is a solid standard dose for someone with a bit of experience. 10mg to 25mg is for regular users comfortable with stronger effects. Above 25mg is high-dose territory — not a starting point for most people.
When you come in, tell your budtender it's your first time with edibles. They'll steer you toward something appropriate and walk you through exactly what to expect.
What We Carry
Our edible selection rotates but typically includes gummies, chocolates, mints, and beverages. Gummies and chocolates are the most predictable in terms of onset. Beverages tend to kick in a little faster. Your budtender will tell you what's currently in stock and which ones our customers have been responding to best.
One More Thing
If you ever feel like you've taken more than you wanted — it's uncomfortable but it's not dangerous. Find somewhere comfortable, drink some water, and remind yourself it's temporary. It always passes.
We're at 643 E State Street in Colon, Michigan. Open every day 8am to 8pm. Our team is always happy to help you find the right product and the right dose.
